Outlets & switches

Small changes that make everyday life easier.

What this service does

A well-placed outlet or a dependable switch makes a room easier to live in. Device work ranges from replacing worn receptacles to adding new locations and controls. The circuit behind the device matters as much as the finish you can see.

Move ground-fault protection to an appropriate breaker or receptacle arrangement.

Existing compatible wiring. Fault repair and extensive circuit reconfiguration excluded.

AFCI receptacle installation$225–$405 per location

Install an outlet-type AFCI where that method is permitted for the existing circuit.

This is not automatically equivalent to whole-circuit AFCI breaker protection. Circuit suitability must be confirmed.

USB-A / USB-C charging receptacle$202.50–$360 per location

Replace a standard outlet with a compatible integrated USB charging receptacle.

Standard quality device included. Higher-wattage models and box enlargement cost more.

Whole-house tamper-resistant receptacle upgrade$1,620–$3,150 per 40 receptacles

Replace approximately 40 existing outlets and covers with tamper-resistant devices.

Serviceable grounded wiring. GFCI/AFCI devices, circuit repairs and extra outlets excluded.

Recessed outlet for wall-mounted TV$270–$585 per location

Install a recessed power box behind a television from a nearby suitable circuit.

TV mounting, data cabling and drywall repair excluded.

In-cabinet hidden outlet$315–$675 per location

Add power inside an appliance garage or medicine cabinet using suitable equipment.

Existing circuit nearby. Appliance-specific controls and new dedicated circuits extra.

Powered drawer outlet with shutoff$495–$990 per drawer

Install a listed in-drawer power assembly with its required safety control.

Standard assembly included. Cabinet fabrication or finish work excluded.

Floor-box receptacle$540–$1,080 per location

Install a listed floor box and receptacle with accessible wiring from below.

Wood floor over crawlspace/basement. Slab cutting and finished-floor restoration excluded.

Weather-resistant exterior outlet and in-use cover$315–$630 per new location

Add a weather-resistant, protected receptacle with a suitable exterior box and cover.

Nearby suitable circuit, ordinary ground-level access. New circuit extra.

Heavy-duty 20A receptacle$180–$315 per location

Install a specification-grade receptacle on an appropriate existing circuit.

A 20A receptacle does not turn a 15A circuit into a 20A circuit.

Two-prong to labeled GFCI three-prong conversion$202.50–$360 per location

Provide GFCI protection and required labeling where a grounding conductor is absent.

Does not add an equipment ground. Assumes circuit conditions permit the conversion.

Half-hot switched outlet to unswitched$180–$315 per location

Reconfigure an existing split receptacle so both halves remain powered.

Suitable existing wiring. Required room lighting control must remain addressed.

Single-pole toggle / rocker switch replacement$157.50–$247.50 per single-location visit

Replace a standard switch and cover and verify operation.

Standard device included. Suitable batch replacements often $40–$75 each.

Three-way switch diagnosis and replacement$225–$450 per switch circuit

Identify the common/traveler conductors and replace faulty three-way controls.

One two-location switching circuit. Major rewiring excluded.

Four-way multi-location switch installation$360–$810 per added control location

Add an intermediate control point to a compatible lighting circuit.

Includes a short accessible cable route. Whole-room rewiring excluded.

Single-pole LED dimmer$180–$315 per location

Install an LED-compatible dimmer and check dimming performance.

Standard dimmer included. Lamp or driver incompatibilities may require separate equipment.

Multi-location LED dimmer and companion$315–$585 per two-location set

Install a compatible main dimmer and companion for one lighting load.

Two devices and existing suitable wiring. Additional controls cost extra.

Motion / occupancy / vacancy wall switch$202.50–$360 per location

Replace a switch with a sensor control and adjust detection and timeout.

Standard sensor included. New wiring or load incompatibility extra.

Countdown timer switch$202.50–$337.50 per location

Install a timer for a compatible bath fan, heater control or other load.

Standard timer included. Load rating and neutral availability must be checked.

Astronomical exterior-light timer$225–$405 per location

Install and program a timer that follows sunrise and sunset for exterior lighting.

Existing switching circuit. Contactors or separate control enclosures extra.

Low-voltage relay lighting upgrade$1,800–$5,400 per 4–8 controlled loads

Modernize an older small relay-based lighting arrangement and its controls.

Small existing relay-based lighting controls; compatibility and supported equipment must be checked. Not comprehensive whole-home automation or universal ecosystem support.

Wireless kinetic switch and receiver$270–$585 per control set

Add a compatible self-powered wireless switch with a wired receiver at the load.

One light/load and accessible receiver mounting. Lighting equipment excluded.

Vintage-style push-button switch$225–$405 per location

Common options and scope

Outlet installation and replacement

Add or relocate receptacles, replace loose or damaged devices, and select tamper-resistant, weather-resistant, or USB-equipped receptacles suited to the location and circuit.

GFCI protection

Install or troubleshoot ground-fault protection in applicable wet, outdoor, garage, kitchen, bathroom, and other required locations. The correct configuration depends on downstream wiring and current code.

Switches, dimmers and multi-location control

Replace single-pole, three-way, and four-way controls; add dimmers, occupancy sensors, timers, and smart switches. Confirm lamp compatibility, load type, neutral availability, and box space.

Floor, countertop and specialty outlets

Plan floor boxes, furniture-power locations, recessed television receptacles, and task-area outlets with approved equipment and suitable wiring routes.

Ungrounded and problematic receptacles

Assess two-prong outlets, reversed polarity, missing grounds, loose connections, and overloaded boxes. A three-prong device by itself does not create a grounding path.

What happens during the work

New wiring may require wall access and permits. Share the room layout and the devices you intend to plug in so the location and circuit can be selected together.

Helpful to have ready

A short description, your city or ZIP, and photos of the visible area or equipment. Never remove electrical covers or touch exposed wiring for a photo.

Questions

Can a two-prong outlet simply be changed to three-prong?

Not without evaluating the wiring. A compliant approach may involve adding a grounding path or a permitted GFCI-protected and labeled arrangement; the correct solution depends on the installation.
