NEMA 14-50 EV charging outlet

A plug-in charger needs a receptacle and circuit suited to sustained charging, not merely an outlet with the right shape.

When this work makes sense

  • A compatible portable EV charger
  • A damaged or unsuitable existing charging receptacle
  • Charging in a new garage location

The electrical work

Install a dedicated 240V circuit with a heavy-duty 14-50 receptacle and applicable protection.

Approximately 25–50 ft. Charger and panel capacity upgrades excluded.

Estimated pricing

$900–$1,980 per circuit

Project ranges include labor and standard installation materials unless a listing says otherwise. Hourly rates are labor only, and equipment you supply (such as chargers, fixtures or fans) is not included. Permit fees and sales tax are additional. Estimates are free, including on-site visits.

Electrical work may require openings in walls or ceilings. Drywall patching, texture, and painting are not included and must be arranged with others.

What affects the scope and cost

  • Charger instructions and plug type
  • Existing conductor and protection suitability
  • Distance from panel

A common question

Is a plug-in outlet always preferable to a hardwired charger?

No. Equipment instructions, protection requirements and the intended charging rate matter. True can compare a receptacle installation with hardwiring for the charger you select.
