What this service involves

Install a customer-supplied fan and compatible downrod using elevated access equipment.

Typical scope and limits: Typical 12–18 ft ceiling and suitable existing support. Unusual lift/scaffold access extra.

Who usually needs it

Homeowners replacing or adding ceiling fans, exhaust fans, or electric heaters.

Estimated pricing

$585–$1,260 per fan

Priced per fan. This is a planning range, not a quote.

Project ranges include labor and standard installation materials unless a listing says otherwise. Hourly rates are labor only, and equipment you supply (such as chargers, fixtures or fans) is not included. Permit fees and sales tax are additional. Estimates are free, including on-site visits.

Electrical work may require openings in walls or ceilings. Drywall patching, texture, and painting are not included and must be arranged with others.

What an electrician evaluates first

  • Box support rating for fans
  • Existing wiring and switching
  • Heater or fan electrical rating
  • Attic or ceiling access

Typical work sequence

  1. Confirm the unit and location
  2. Prepare support and wiring
  3. Install and connect
  4. Test operation and controls

Access and disruption

Replacements reuse existing locations where possible. New locations and ducting can need ceiling or wall openings.

Permits and inspection

New circuits, equipment changes and most wiring alterations normally need an electrical permit and inspection. In Washington, Labor & Industries issues electrical permits except in cities that run their own electrical program, so the permitting authority depends on the property address rather than the mailing city. True confirms the correct authority before work starts. Permit fees are additional to the estimate.

Helpful, safe photos

The existing unit, the ceiling or wall, and the switch location. Only photograph what is safely visible — never remove electrical covers.

Questions

Is ductwork included with a fan?

Replacing an existing fan includes connecting it to suitable existing ducting. New or additional ductwork is not included and is discussed before installation.

Can any ceiling box hold a fan?

No. Ceiling fans need a fan-rated box and support.
