Estimated pricing
- Existing fan replacement
- $300–$600 per fan
- New-location installation
- $600–$1,100 per fan
Replacing an existing fan typically costs $300–$600, including connection to suitable existing ducting. Installing a fan in a new location typically costs $600–$1,100. Labor and materials are included; permit fees and sales tax are additional. Any additional ductwork needs will be discussed before installation.
New or additional ductwork is not included in either standard range. Any duct changes or additional ductwork must be discussed and agreed upon before installation. Exterior vent caps, roof penetrations, duct replacement and new duct runs are not included work.
Electrical work may require openings in walls or ceilings. Drywall patching, texture, and painting are not included and must be arranged with others.
Common reasons to replace a bathroom fan
- Loud older fans that people avoid turning on
- Weak airflow and lingering fog or condensation
- Peeling paint or mildew on the ceiling
- A fan that has stopped or a seized motor
- A remodel that changes the room or ceiling
Quiet and humidity-sensing options
Modern fans can be much quieter than older units. Compare the manufacturer’s sone rating.
A humidity-sensing fan or a timer switch helps the fan run long enough after a shower without someone remembering to turn it off. Your choice affects the control and, sometimes, the wiring.
Typical work sequence
- Confirm the fan model and control
- Turn off the circuit and remove the old fan
- Fit the new housing, adapting the opening when the size differs
- Connect wiring and the existing duct connection where suitable
- Install the control, test airflow and operation
Wiring, access and disruption
Replacements usually work from the bathroom and the attic above. A larger housing may require enlarging the ceiling opening; a smaller one may leave a gap that needs patching.
Fans with lights, heaters or a new switch location can change the wiring scope. Drywall patching, texture and painting are not included and must be arranged with others.

Questions
What does replacing an existing fan cost?
Typically $300–$600, including labor, materials and connection to suitable existing ducting. Fan selection, existing conditions and access affect the final price. Permit fees and sales tax are additional.
What does adding a fan in a new location cost?
Typically $600–$1,100 for a new bathroom or laundry-room exhaust-fan location, including labor and materials. Location, fan type, wiring requirements, access and scope affect the final price. Permit fees and sales tax are additional.
Is new or additional ductwork included?
New or additional ductwork is not included in either standard range. Any duct changes or additional ductwork must be discussed and agreed upon before installation. Exterior vent caps, roof penetrations, duct replacement and new duct runs are not included work.
Can a bigger fan fix a steamy bathroom?
Sometimes, but duct length, duct condition and how long the fan runs often matter as much as fan size.
Does a bathroom fan need its own circuit?
Usually not. Most fans connect to an existing bathroom lighting circuit when it has capacity; heater units can need more.
Is a heat-lamp or heater/fan combination the same price?
No. Combination heater units are a separate scope with their own estimate.
